THE PROJECT

The rehabilitation of Endeavour Bridge over Cooks River was completed over a 12-month period and is one of the largest rehabilitation and cathodic protection installation projects in NSW for the Roads and Traffic Authority.

The Roads and Traffic Authority were seeking a solution to provide long term ongoing protection to the bridge structure, with a combination of impressed current cathodic protection and sacrificial galvanic protection as well as providing an aesthetically pleasing finish.

THE SOLUTION

640m2 of concrete was repaired using a combination of Renderoc HB40 and Renderoc LA55. The Renderoc HB40 was applied using a wet spray method. 1500 Galvashield XP2 were installed within the patch repairs to headstocks and soffits to prevent the formation of incipient anodes and to extend the life of the patch repair.

To provide the desired finish the external concrete surfaces of the bridge, including the patch repairs, were covered with Renderoc FC, a cement based fairing mortar to provide an even smooth finish to the surfaces. To provide additional protection, the 9600m2 of concrete surfaces had an anti-carbonation coating applied, Dekguard S, in a colour specifically chosen by the RTA.

THE BENEFITS

Dekguard S protective coating system provided protection to exposed bridge elements from the harsh marine environment.

The use of high performance Renderoc repair mortars and galvanic anodes Galvashield XP2 provided long lasting repairs to damaged sections of the bridge, whilst protecting the structure from future corrosion problems.
