A 550 sqm concrete warehouse storage facility floor required a complete remediation to ensure it was crack-free, durable, fit for purpose and suitable to store heavy machinery and shelving. A tight timeline and low temperature considerations were factors influencing the project.

In the town of Taupō on New Zealand’s North Island, a warehouse storage facility floor required a complete remediation. Although the concrete flooring had only recently been laid, it was already cracking and showing signs of improper curing.

“The facility was going to be used to store heavy machinery and storage units, so the concrete floor needed to provide long-term durability and be able to withstand heavy traffic,” explains Fosroc New Zealand Account Manager, William Lassey.

Hands-on training sets the scene

The decision to specify Fosroc products for this flooring remediation stemmed from in-person product training.

“Fosroc’s Product Segment Specialists had recently run a fantastic product training session for New Zealand applicators and contractors,” explains William. “This session allowed local applicators to learn more about our leading range, and to see the latest products in action.”

The session, conducted in partnership with stockists Youngman Richardson, included a hands-on demonstration of recently released Nitoflor FC150 HP-SL, which was delivered by Andrew Nelson, Product Segment Specialist for Flooring and Coatings.

Expert advice leads to custom specification

“Having seen the benefits of Nitoflor FC150 HP-SL, applicators SW Crete invited us to Taupō to advise on the specification,” explains William.

The project entailed remediation of an approx. 550 sqm concrete floor to achieve a highly durable and long-wearing flooring solution that would not crack or fail.

“We worked with SW Crete and the asset owner to understand the project requirements, application conditions and preferred timings, before recommending a tailored specification.”

The recommended system comprised:

• Nitomortar F4 Fillers
• Nitoseal PU400
• Nitofill LV
• Nitomortar 903
• Nitoflor FC150 HP-SL
• Nitoflor FC150 HP-SL colour pots in silver grey and light grey

Expert application with on-site technical support

The following steps were undertaken to remediate the warehouse storage facility floor:

• Step 1: Cracks were cleaned up and the concrete surface was ground back to ensure a sound, clean, dry substrate.
• Step 2: Cracks were filled with the Nitofill LV crack injection system and joints sealed with Nitoseal PU400.
• Step 3: The floor was primed with Nitomortar 903 and Nitomortar F4 Fillers to provide early development of initial hardness.
• Step 4: Nitoflor FC150 HPSL was mixed and poured as a high build epoxy coating. Spike shoes were used to ensure uniform application and achieve a flawless, professional grade finish. Nitoflor FC150 HP-SL colour pots in silver grey and light grey achieved the desired aesthetic.

The SW Crete team undertook an initial 100 sqm of the floor to ensure optimal results, before completing the remaining 450 sqm.

William and New Zealand Specification Manager Mike James were on site to support and advise the application team.

“We helped ensure that the conditions were right for successful application. In Taupō, it can get very cold, so fans were used to ensure the ideal temperature range for effective curing,” William explains.

“We also provided application tips, as well as advice on how to achieve the asset owner’s preferred timing of four days to complete the job. Nitoflor FC150 HPSL’s fast dry time was an advantage.”

Project success delights client

William and Mike returned to Taupō to see the warehouse floor at the conclusion of the project.

“The project manager and asset owner were thrilled. They let us know that our involvement from the beginning had been crucial to the project’s success.”
