A proven combination of Fosroc products created a "rock solid" result for the concrete floors at this lead battery recycling facility.
THE PROJECT
At Enecell Resource Recovery Solutions in Perth's south east, a durable protective coatings solutions was required for the concrete floors, pedestals and drainage areas in this brand new battery recycling facility.
Coatings needed to be resistant to harmful chemicals including lead and sulphuric acid. And with Enecell's strong focus on safety and compliance, it was vital that the solution followed correct specification and application.
A tailored solution for a unique environment
Enecell Resource Recovery Solutions specialises in the collection, recycling, and safe disposal of lead-acid batteries, which are widely used in vehicles, backup power supplies, and industrial applications. Enecell aims to reduce the environmental impact of lead-acid battery waste through responsible recycling - turning waste into valuable materials that can be reused.
Enecell required robust barrier protection on the brand new concrete floors, pedestals and drainage areas at its facility in Forrestdale. Director, Paul Owens, had seen the performance of Fosroc products at the Nexus Battery Recycling Plant and sought the same high quality outcomes for Enecell. He also wanted hands-on guidance to complete the process properly.
Preparation and application
Professional flooring applicators MS Painting and Decorating tackled two sections of the facility - one smaller, low-traffic area behind machines, boundary walls and sumps and a larger area that required protection from high traffic.
MS Painting and Decorating applied a tailored process to each section. Substantial preparation of the substrates was completed by the builder, Castleross Construction:

- Step 1: Preparation: diamond edge grinding, pressure washing, vacuuming and clean-up
- Step 2: Apply one coat of Nitomortar 903
- Step 3: Apply first coat of Nitocote EP410 (in grey)
- Step 4: Apply second coat of Nitocote EP410
1224 sqm of concrete floor, pedestals and drainage area
- Step 1: Preparation: pressure washing, vacuuming and clean-up
- Step 2: Apply one coat of Nitomortar 903
- Step 3: Apply first coat of Nitocote EP410 (in grey)
- Step 4: Apply second coat of Nitocote EP410 with Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains 02
- Step 5: Apply first coat of Nitoflor N
- Step 6: Apply second coat of Nitoflor N
Where required, Fosroc's Conbextra cementitious grout was used during the preparation phase, and also formed part of the system.
"Being able to provide such a broad range of products demonstrated the value of the full Fosroc offer," says Fosroc's WA industrial flooring expert, Sales and Specification Support Specialist Ron Ierino.
An extremely hard-wearing result
Enecell's concrete floors required extremely strong protection from the chemicals associated with lead batteries and the processes used to recycle them. During this process, chemical spills and splashes onto the floor drain away via the floor's fall to a drainage sump.
"The concrete needed robust protection against these harsh chemicals," explains Ron.
According to Muks Hussain from MS Painting and Decorating, the result on the high-traffic area of the project was "rock solid" thanks to the quality of the products and the fact that five coats in total were applied.
About the products
The tough, chemical-resistant Fosroc products selected for this project included:
- Nitomortar 903 is a is a solvent free epoxy resin binder system that can be used as a priming system with some Nitoflor epoxy flooring products. It offers early development of initial hardness, minimises maintenance disruption and is unaffected by a wide range of acids, alkalis and industrial chemicals.
- Nitocote EP410 is a highly chemical resistant, high build, solvent free, two pack epoxy coating for concrete and steel. It provides protection for structures in aggressive chemical exposure environments or immersion conditions.
- Nitoflor N is a two part solvent free novolac epoxy floor coating that is highly resistant to aggressive chemicals such as acids. It offers excellent wear and abrasion resistance.
- Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains 02 are used in the application of epoxy roll coats on floors to make the surface slip resistant.
Fosroc's expert support critical to project success
Fosroc's Ron Ierino, who was involved in this project from day one, providing detailed advice on product selection, surface preparation, application and drying times at the outset to help ensure a successful outcome.
He also provided responsive liaison with the MS Painting and Decorating team, answering technical queries and making multiple onsite visits to check application progress - including before and after the application of Nitomortar 903 primer.
"Every step we were in attendance on site," explains Ron.
For applicator Muks Hussain, Ron's involvement was priceless.
"Ron was amazing. He was incredibly responsive to emails, phone calls, and is just so knowledgeable about all the technical aspects of the products and their application. He even came down to provide advice on a Saturday, as this job went across a weekend."
First class project outcomes
As the images demonstrate, the outcome on this project was not only durable and fit-for-purpose, but also looked incredible. Asset owner Paul was extremely pleased with the results. Early on in the process, he shared this feedback:
"I see already some of the flooring parts with the materials already applied and I must say it looks great!"
