Fosroc ANZ has taken a significant step forward in its sustainability journey with the publication of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) across its core Renderoc and Conbextra ranges.
With 13 EPDs now available, Fosroc ANZ is among a select group of manufacturers in Australia investing in independently verified environmental data - providing greater transparency for customers, consultants and asset owners seeking to make more informed decisions.
What is an EPD?
In simple terms, an EPD is a standardised, independently verified document that outlines the environmental impact of a product from raw material extraction through to all aspects of its manufacture.
“EPDs turn sustainability from a claim into a measurable engineering parameter,” says Fosroc ANZ Product Segment Specialist, Hamid Khan. “They give designers and asset owners reliable, science-based data so they can move from assumptions to informed decisions.”
Why EPDs matter in construction
The practical applications of EPDs are becoming increasingly important. They are now commonly used in project specification and tendering processes, enabling more informed product selection aligned with sustainability goals. EPDs also play a key role in Green Star ratings and whole-of-life carbon assessments, supporting project teams in quantifying and reducing environmental impact at a systems level.
The adoption of EPDs is accelerating across Australia and globally, particularly across government and infrastructure projects where sustainability reporting is becoming increasingly important. For many stakeholders, understanding how to interpret and apply EPD data remains a work in progress - making early leadership particularly valuable.
Fosroc ANZ’s investment reflects this long-term view. The development of our EPD portfolio has been a multi-year effort, involving detailed data collection, lifecycle assessment modelling, and rigorous third-party verification. Each declaration aligns with internationally recognised standards and is independently reviewed to ensure credibility and transparency.
“Producing an EPD is a deeply technical, evidence-based process,” Hamid explains. “But it’s also a critical tool in modern construction. It helps engineers design more durable, lower-carbon infrastructure and supports better decision-making across the project lifecycle.”
Behind the data: building a credible EPD
Fosroc ANZ Technical Manager, Pete Battista carefully collated product lifecycle data to ensure the EPDs are highly detailed. Pete explains how Fosroc ANZ maps environmental impacts from 'cradle to gate' - from raw material sourcing and transport through to manufacturing and factory dispatch.
"The information goes beyond the sourcing of the raw materials. We gather data on transportation, how much electricity is consumed by the mixers when they're making certain products, how much packaging we generate - even down to the amount of energy used by the forklifts to move the end product."
“We focus on the stages where we have the greatest level of control and accuracy in the data,” he explains. “Transport and installation can vary significantly from project to project, so the EPD framework uses standardised modelling to ensure consistency and comparability.”
Beyond carbon: sustainability and durability
Beyond transparency, EPDs are a critical step toward deeper industry change. As embodied carbon becomes a central focus in construction, access to reliable, product-level data is essential. EPDs provide the foundation for understanding where emissions occur and how they can be reduced over time.
Importantly, Fosroc ANZ’s approach also recognises that sustainability extends beyond upfront carbon metrics.
“Sustainability is no longer a marketing buzzword. It is fundamentally linked to durability,” says Hamid. “If we can extend the service life of structures and reduce the need for future repairs, we significantly lower whole-of-life environmental impact. That’s where the real value lies.”
He adds that sustainability is also about responsibility: “It’s our ability to respond to changing industry needs and develop solutions that leave a better world for the next generation. It’s a technical challenge but it’s also a deeply important one.”
For Fosroc ANZ, the publication of 13 EPDs marks a meaningful step in a broader sustainability journey - one that aligns product innovation with the evolving needs of designers, specifiers, contractors and asset owners.
As the industry continues to shift toward measurable, outcomes-driven sustainability, the role of EPDs will only grow. By investing early and comprehensively, Fosroc ANZ is helping to set a benchmark for informed decision-making in construction.
Our EPDs will soon be available to view and download here on our website. Right now, they are available from the EPD Australasia website.
